Inuvik means place of man in Inuvialuktun, the language of the Inuit people, and
although 200 km (124 mi) south of the Arctic Circle on the shores of the Beaufort
Delta may seem like an unlikely place for any person to settle, over 3000 people
call this pristine location home. Unlike many far north towns, Inuvik is fortunate
to be connected to the Canadian Highway System via the Dempster
Highway. That's not to say that getting to this town is the Northwest
Territories is a piece of cake though—the town is nearly 1200 km (680
mi) north of Whitehorse, the
capital of the Yukon. For many who
visit Inuvik, this remote location is a huge draw, as it offers unspoiled access
to the best hunting and northern-light viewing that cannot be found within city
limits. Besides the vast and stunning scenery, Inuvik's most recognizable attraction
is the Our
Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, which is famously shaped like an Igloo.
